Iodine and Nuclear Fallout: Fear about potential nuclear fallout has resulted in Europeans stocking up on iodine

Image
Why People Are Rushing for Iodine Amid Nuclear Concerns? As reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP), March 8, 2022: 1 “European countries have seen stocks of iodine fly off the shelves due to fears it may be needed to counter the risks of thyroid cancer if Russia's invasion of Ukraine causes a nuclear incident. France said it would send 2.5 million doses of the chemical compound to Ukraine after Russian forces there seized the defunct Chernobyl nuclear site and damaged Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest atomic plant.” Your thyroid gland needs iodine to make hormones that influence your metabolism and other vital functions. Since your body does not produce iodine, you must get it through your diet on a daily basis. When your body lacks sufficient iodine, it cannot make enough thyroid hormone. If your deficiency is severe, your thyroid may become enlarged, a condition also known as a goiter. Iodine deficiency can also cause hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). On the other hand, exc...

Studies show NOVOS’ ingredient combo maintains DNA and targets senescence

Image
NOVOS , a company that develops science-based products to slow down aging, has announced the results of two studies demonstrating that the combination of ingredients in its products, NOVOS Core and NOVOS Boost, protect against DNA damage and cellular aging ( senescence ). Protecting DNA A study found that a combination of the 12 ingredients in NOVOS Core and the nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) in NOVOS Boost significantly protects cells against DNA damage over a wide dose range. The study was done by Ichor Life Sciences, an independent third-party US-based lab specialised in DNA damage, cellular senescence and aging. In the study, HUVEC cells ( human umbilical vein endothelial cells ) were treated with the 13-ingredient NOVOS formulation and then irradiated. Irradiation typically causes pronounced DNA damage. However, the cells exposed to NOVOS before irradiation had significantly less DNA damage after being exposed to radiation, as measured via 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG or...

Vegans need to stop exaggerating the health benefits of a plant-based diet

Image
On the internet, you’ll find extreme dieters of all types, and many of them will swear to you that theirs is the only healthy way for a human to eat. At one end of the spectrum, there’s Jordan Peterson with his   carnivore diet,   consisting of nothing but beef, salt and water. At the other, “ frugivore ” diets pushed by YouTubers and their ilk are not just vegan and raw but almost entirely made up of fresh fruit. And then, of course, we have the classic and unapologetically restrictive weight loss programs like the   cabbage soup diet , the   Master Cleanse   (aka the lemonade diet), and the currently trendy   Mono Diet,  where you eat only one food. Advocates for highly restrictive diets like these tend to massively overemphasize the benefits of their approved food while seriously exaggerating the drawbacks of all other foods. But these are only the most extreme examples of a supposed “wellness” culture that makes huge generalizations and routinely m...

This group's wiped out $6.7 billion in medical debt, and it's just getting started

Image
Soon after giving birth to a daughter two months premature, Terri Logan received a bill from the hospital. She recoiled from the string of numbers separated by commas. Logan, who was a high school math teacher in Georgia, shoved it aside and ignored subsequent bills. She was a single mom who knew she had no way to pay. "I avoided it like the plague," she says, but avoidance didn't keep the bills out of mind. "The weight of all of that medical debt — oh man, it was tough," Logan says. "Every day, I'm thinking about what I owe, how I'm going to get out of this ... especially with the money coming in just not being enough." Then a few months ago — nearly 13 years after her daughter's birth and many anxiety attacks later — Logan received some bright yellow envelopes in the mail. They were from a nonprofit group telling her it had bought and then forgiven all those past medical bills. This time, it was a very different kind of surprise: "Wa...

Yamanaka Factors and Partial Cellular Reprogramming

Image
The most intriguing finding from Yamanaka factors is that  it can reverse aging in human skin cells by 30 years . Too good to be true?  In 2006, a study by Drs. Kazutoshi and Shinya Yamanaka showed that it was possible to reprogram cells using just four master genes named Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc, or OSKM for short [ R ]. These four reprogramming factors are often called the Yamanaka factors after one of their discoverers. Prior to this, it was assumed that egg cells (oocytes) would contain a complex array of factors needed to reprogram a somatic cell into becoming an embryonic cell. After all, the feat of transforming an aged egg cell and reprogramming it to make a new animal must be controlled by many factors present in the egg cell, or so they thought. Takahashi and Yamanaka turned this idea upside down when they showed that just four of the Yamanaka factors were needed to achieve this transformation. They used the Yamanaka factors to reprogram adult mouse fibroblasts (...
