Flavonoids: Benefits and Top Foods 2023

Flavonoids are various compounds found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, tea and wine. There are six different types of flavonoids found in food, and each type is broken down differently by your body.

Flavonoids have strong antioxidant properties and can protect your body from environmental pollutants. Increasing the amount of flavonoids in your diet is a terrific approach to support the health of your body and maybe lower your chance of developing some chronic health conditions.

Flavonoids Benefits

Flavonoids assist in controlling cellular function and shield our cells from potentially harmful chemicals known as free radicals. Simply put, they make your body work more effectively while safeguarding it against common pollutants and stresses.

Flavonoids are also strong antioxidant agents. Your body can be exposed to substances that could be toxic; antioxidants aid in the defense against these compounds. Antioxidants are produced naturally by your body and are also present in dark chocolate, lentils, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.

One of your body's immunological reactions is inflammation. Inflammation can be brought on by allergens, bacteria, toxins, and other irritants, which can cause unpleasant symptoms. Your body may be able to suppress that inflammatory response with the aid of flavonoids, which would lessen the symptoms.

Flavonoids May Have Blood Pressure-lowering Effect

The body can benefit from flavonoids in various ways. One strategy to treat high blood pressure is by include foods rich in flavonoids in your diet. A 2015 review found that at least five subtypes of flavonoids have a demonstrable effect in lowering high blood pressure.

Flavonoids May Lower Cardiovascular Disease

According in one study, flavonoid consumption was associated with lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most inverse associations appeared with intermediate intakes, suggesting that even relatively small amounts of flavonoid-rich foods may be beneficial.

Flavonoids May Lower Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Risk

A study suggests that higher intakes of total flavonoids and subclasses (anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavonols, and isoflavones) are associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)

Top Foods High in Flavonoids

Increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet is the simplest approach to get more flavonoids because many plant foods are high in them. Some of the finest sources of dietary flavonoids are found in these foods:

Onion

Onions have been identified as one of the main dietary sources of flavonoids. Onions primarily include two types of flavonoids: anthocyanins, which give some varieties their red or purple color, and flavonols, including quercetin and its derivatives, which give many other varieties their yellow and brown skins.

Berries

Although flavonoids are present in many types of berries, some are more strong than others. Blackberries have all six types of flavonoids, making them exceptionally potent. All flavonoids are also present in raspberries, cherries, and other berries. Moderate levels of anthocyanidins are present in strawberries.

Red Cabbage

Red cabbage is a fantastic dietary source of anthocyanidins. Particularly, anthocyanidins have been investigated for their ability to prevent diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related cognitive impairments.

Tea

High quantities of flavanols, which have been researched for their advantages to cardiovascular, are present in green, oolong, and black teas.

Red Wine

Red wine is a fantastic source of flavanols. Red wine has several health advantages when consumed in moderation, especially when it comes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dark Chocolate

Flavanol content is high in both cocoa and chocolate. Particularly cocoa has been investigated for its potential to improve cognitive function and preserve the cardiovascular system.

Citrus Fruits

Flavanones are found in citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, and limes. These beneficial plant chemicals become even more concentratedly available when these fruits are juiced. In order to increase nutritious value, you can also squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice into cold water.

I have an autoimmune disease that causes a great deal of inflammation in my joints. While this product is not a cure all, I have definitely noticed a significant reduction in inflammation in my joints and, as a result, a great deal of reduction in pain. It did not take very long for this to have an effect on my body either. I have been taking this supplement for about a week and noticed a difference within days. I have regained some range of motion in my hands & fingers because it reduced the inflammatory response.
