8 Best Formula for Reflux and Lactose Intolerance 2022

Acid reflux and lactose intolerance are some common problems in infants. Acid reflux is what happens when stomach contents and acid flow back up into the throat, where as lactose intolerance happens when infant is unable to digest the lactose found in milk and dairy products. Symptoms of lactose intolerance in infants can include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The best formula for reflux and lactose intolerance is a hypoallergenic formula. This formula contains protein that has been hydrolyzed into very small proteins, making them easier for a baby’s body to digest.

There are two main types of hypoallergenic formula available, including:
  • Extensively Hydrolyzed Formula (EHF): EHF is made from proteins that have been extensively broken down, making them easier to digest. This formula breaks down the milk proteins into even smaller pieces than partially hydrolyzed formula.
  • Amino Acid-Based Formula (AAF): AAF is the most hypoallergenic of the formulas available. This formula has been broken down so extensively that only amino acids remain. Because amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, the baby receives all of the nutrients included in standard formula without having to break down the protein internally.

We tried several formulas and everything made our daughter throw up. Definitely lives up to the "liquid gold" reputation.

4. HiPP HA (Hypoallergenic) Formula Stage 1 from Birth 600g

BUY ON FORMULAND.COM

Hipp HA formula is a hypoallergenic formula that is suitable for babies with milk protein allergies. Milk protein can be an important factor to trigger allergies. The Hypoallergenic (HA) protein diet contains milk which is split in simple molecules. This reduces the risk of allergies. The protein formula used in Hipp is completely hydrolyzed and was proven by studies to prevent allergies.

A low-allergen diet cannot give complete protection but reduces the risk of allergies in infants. The HA formula should stay constant for 4 to 6 months in order to produce best results. A small amount of non-hydrolyzed protein can promote sensitivity and destroy the benefits of the low-allergen diet.

Enfamil Pregestimil Infant Formula Review
When my son was 2 months old he was diagnosed with a severe milk protein allergy. His stomach lining was torn severely causing bloody diapers and lots of pain. We had tried nutramigen and aulimentum and many other kinds with no success.

Finally after a few days in the hospital his doctor suggested this formula. After a week of using it he was a completely different baby! He started sleeping through the night, smiling, laughing and barely cries. It's been a lifesaver.

Enfamil PurAmino Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Reviews
It took a few weeks and adding some Splenda but our baby girl is spitting up a lot less now finally at 7 months. She had bad acid reflux and a serious protein allergy. This formula is not tasty but it's very broken down and good for tummies that have been overworked by allergies or anything else. She will drink it now for the most part without the Splenda.

Our baby girl is now 11 months old. She is still on Pure Amino and I still think it was a life saver. We are struggling with the cost these days, but she is as healthy as any other baby her age these days and we have this formula to thank for it.

FAQ

a. How Do I Know if My Baby Needs Hypoallergenic Formula?

i. Extreme Irritability
If your baby cries for long periods of time and/or seems unconsolable, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor. He can evaluate your baby further and help diagnose a cow’s milk allergy. In this case, switching to a hypoallergenic baby formula may help your baby’s symptoms.

ii. Family History of Food Allergies
If you or a member of your family has a history of food allergies, your baby is more likely to have one as well. An extensive French study done in 2019 showed a strong genetic link in cow’s milk protein allergies (CMPA).

iii. Constant diarrhea / vomiting

iv. Your baby has acid reflux (GERD)
Acid reflux is what happens when stomach contents and acid flow back up into the throat. This is a common problem in infants, especially those below 3 months old. Hypoallergenic formula may help reduce the symptoms.

v. Eczema
Your baby’s skin is sensitive, which can make it difficult to tell the difference between dry skin and eczema. Eczema is extreme dry skin that is red, inflamed, itchy, and often cracked. Babies with eczema are more likely to develop food allergies and oftentimes will develop skin symptoms before other food allergy symptoms appear. (Source)

vi. Respiratory Issues
If your baby is wheezing or experiencing other respiratory issues, your baby may need immediate medical attention. See a doctor as quickly as possible.

Above all, if you're unsure, best consult a doctor for determining the best formula for your baby.

b. When Will My Baby's Reflux Go Away?

A normal baby with mild acid reflux may spit up after feedings, but usually isn’t irritable. This problem usually stops after 12 months.

c. How can I treat my baby's reflux naturally?

  • Avoid overfeeding. If the baby's stomach is too full, some of the contents might be pushed back out. To reduce overfeeding, feed your baby smaller amounts more frequently.
  • Burp your baby frequently. Extra gas in the stomach causes gas bubbles to escape, which has a tendency to bring the rest of the stomach's contents up as well. Burp after and during meals.
  • Limit active play after meals
  • Hold your baby upright. Pressing on a baby's belly right after feeding may push their stomach contents out.
  • Consider the formula. Frequent vomiting may serve as one of several signs that it's time to consider alternative formulas with your pediatrician.
  • Give oatmeal. Only recommended for babies after 6 months old. Babies with reflux may need thicker food to order to swallow safely or reduce reflux.
  • Avoid tight diapers or clothing
