Top Milk Powder Options for Children 5 and Up: A 2022 Review

Milk is often considered a helpful product for growing children because it is a full supply of energy and the richest and most affordable source of high nutritional quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin A.

A study supports the hypothesis that dairy consumers had higher intakes of micronutrients and higher nutrient adequacy than children who consumed no milk or dairy products.

Does My 5-Year-Old Need Milk?

Milk is a good source of many nutrients, which can also be found in other food sources. However, it may be challenging if your child is a picky eater.

Contemplating whether your kid should keep drinking milk? Here are a few advantages that milk provides to a growing child:
  • Milk contains many nutrients, including calcium, vitamin B, an especially significant amount of vitamin B2 and fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, and E.
  • Vitamin D-fortified milk can prevent vitamin D deficiency which causes rickets. Studies have identified severe rickets from vitamin D deficiency in children who did not drink cow’s milk and had not been taking vitamin D supplements.
  • Milk contains calcium, which is vital for bone health. According to one study of growing children, long-term avoidance of cow milk is associated with small stature and poor bone health.
  • Milk may boost brain development. A study suggests that fortifying milk with micronutrients and PUFA could be an effective and practical way to aid children's cognitive development.

USDA Milk Recommendations

NIDO Fortificada Dry Whole Milk Reviews
My child , now 2 1/2, started drinking this around her 1 st birthday . My child was strictly a brest fed baby and when i had to transition her into milk, she HATED (super hated) regular vitamin D milk. I remember seeing this milk at a "latin" supermarket. So i asked my mother for advice and she said to go ahead and try it. This was the best decision ever. My kiddo, back when she was 1, loved this. One, of the best parts , its jammed packed with vitamins. Two , the kid loved the taste . Three, you just cant go wrong with this product.

Even if your kiddo was formula fed, you should really try this. This is a great alternative to regular vitamin D milk.

My kiddo drinks this regularly.

FAQ

a. Cow Milk vs. Goat Milk

Cow's milk is the most common type of milk consumed, however, some parents may choose another option, for instance, goat milk. Both are actually suitable for children of all ages. Cow's milk is higher in protein and calcium, but goat's milk contains more beneficial fatty acids and is easier to digest.

In terms of vitamins and minerals, both kinds of milk have plenty to offer, albeit in different quantities. Cow milk has more vitamin B12, selenium, and folic acid than goat milk, while goat milk has more calcium, potassium, and vitamin A.

In addition, it’s possible that goat milk is easier on the stomach. This is because goat milk has fewer micro-proteins than cow milk, which makes it easier for certain people to digest. Fat molecules (or globules, to be more precise) are also smaller, making it easier for your body to process.

Ultimately, the choice between cow's milk and goat's milk depends on individual dietary needs and preferences.

b. Cow Milk Formula vs Soy Milk Formula

According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), cow’s milk formula is still the next best thing to breast milk for the majority of newborns. However, for some infants who can’t digest cow’s milk, it is best to avoid cow milk formula and start using soy milk formula.

With the growing awareness of the potential health benefits of soy products, parents may opt for this type of formula in the belief that it is better for their children. The popularity of soy formulas among American parents has grown, with one out of every four parents now choosing soy. But the AAP says it may not be so. And while the academy doesn’t claim that soy formula will lead to the development of health problems, some experts aren’t so sure.

c. A1 vs A2 Milk

A1 and A2 milk refer to the types of protein found in cow’s milk. A1 milk contains the A1 beta-casein protein, while A2 milk contains the A2 beta-casein protein. The main difference between A1 and A2 milk is that A1 milk may result in gastrointestinal problems while A2 milk might not.

In terms of nutrition, A2 milk is no different from A1 milk. Both milks contain the same essential nutrients, such as calcium, protein, and fats, and provide similar health benefits.

A2 Milk May Increase the Production of the Antioxidant Glutathione
Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that is essential for many bodily functions, including immunological function, gene expression, and protection against oxidative stress. As a result, low glutathione levels promote early aging and the onset and progression of diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's.

A study showed that milk containing only A2 β-casein and not A1 β-casein has the potential to promote the production of the antioxidant glutathione in humans.
