Black Seed Oil Benefits: Skin, Hair, Face and Lungs (2023)

Black seed oil benefits

This article reviews the potential health benefits of black seed oil and covers more than 70 studies on black seed oil.

What is Black Seed Oil?

Nigella sativa (N. sativa) is a small flowering plant that grows in Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and Southern Europe (Source). This plant produces fruit with tiny black seeds. Commonly referred to as black seed, N. sativa seeds go by many other names, such as black caraway, nigella, fennel flower, and Roman coriander (Source).

Black seed oil is extracted from N. sativa seeds and has been used in traditional medicine for over 2,000 years due to its many therapeutic benefits. The bioactive components include thymoquinone, α-hederin, alkaloids and omega-6 fatty acids.

Since the pandemic began, researchers have been evaluating the effect it may have on COVID-19 (Source). The seeds come from the Nigella sativa (N. sativa) plant that grows in Southern Europe, Southwest Asia and the Middle East (Source). Traditional medicine healers have used the seeds in different forms.

Black Seed Oil Benefits 2023

In traditional medicine, black seed oil has been used to treat a variety of health conditions. As a result, it has sometimes been referred to as “panacea” — or universal healer (SourceSource).

While not all of its proposed medicinal uses have been proven to be effective, black seed oil and its plant compounds have been linked to several benefits for health.

1. Black Seed Oil Benefits for Skin and Hair

Black seed oil has also been used for dermatological applications. It helps prevent the skin from drying out. This is because it is rich in plant acids and essential fatty acids which help maintain the skin's lipid barrier.

For example, a review of the literature in the Journal of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery found black seed oil could promote wound healing in farm animals and reduce the impact of vitiligo in lizards (Source).

In one clinical study in humans, lotion infused with 10% of N. sativa oil reduced acne vulgaris after two months with 67% of the patients fully satisfied and 28% partially satisfied with the results (Source).

Research also suggests that due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, black seed oil may help in treating a few skin conditions, including (SourceSource):
- Acne
- Eczema
- General dry skin
- Psoriasis

Despite claims that the oil can also help hydrate hair and reduce dandruff, no clinical studies support these claims.

2. Black Seed Oil Benefits for Face

- Black Seed Oil helps reduce acne scars. Its anti-inflammatory properties reduces the redness and scarring caused by skin inflammation. This reduces the appearance of spots and acne.

- Black Seed Oil is anti-aging. This oil contains Thymoquinone, a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight off free radicals which damage skin cells through oxidation.

Can Black Seed Oil Lighten Skin?

Yes, the amino acids, vitamin A and fatty acid contents found in black seed oil work together to lighten skin. This is because these nutrients help to regenerate skin cells, thus reducing dark spots caused by hormones, sun damage and aging.

Can Black Seed Oil Cure Pimples?

Yes, black seed oil can improve acne with its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

3. Black Seed Oil Benefits for Men (Male Infertility)

Limited research suggests that black seed oil may improve semen quality in men diagnosed with infertility ( SourceSource).

Other potential benefits:
- Helps reduce infertility by increasing testosterone.
- Enhances reproductive tissues, muscle mass, bone mass and body hair.
- Improves sexual stamina
- Boosts the production of urine, this improving prostate health. This also helps to prevent prostate cancer.

4. Black Seed Oil Benefits for Lungs and Asthma

Wagner, a scientist further notes that Nigellone and Thymoquinone are two of the most volatile oils found in black seed. Nigellone provides both anti-spasmodic and broncho-dilating properties that add to the power of black seed against breathing disorders.

Benefits of black seed oil include many studies indicating that this same active ingredient can function as an immune system booster and have proven effective in the treatment of Asthma and Whooping Cough.

Asthma is a chronic condition in which the lining of your airways swell and the muscles around them constrict, making it difficult for you to breathe (Source).

Research has shown that black seed oil, and specifically Thymoquinone in the oil, may help in treating asthma by reducing inflammation and relaxing muscles in the airway (SourceSourceSource).

One study in 80 adults with asthma found that taking 500 mg of black seed oil capsules twice a day for 4 weeks significantly improved asthma control (Source).

While promising, larger and longer studies are needed to assess the long-term safety and effectiveness of black seed oil supplements in the treatment of asthma.

5. High in Antioxidants

Black seed oil is high in antioxidants — plant compounds that help protect cells against damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals (SourceSourceSourceSource).

Antioxidants are important for health, as research has shown that they can reduce inflammation and protect against conditions like heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer (Source).

In particular, black seed oil is rich in Thymoquinone, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. As a result, studies suggest this compound may protect brain health and aid in treating several types of cancer ( SourceSourceSourceSource).

6. May Aid Weight Loss Efforts

While the exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, research shows that black seed oil may help reduce body mass index (BMI) in individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome, or type 2 diabetes (SourceSource).

Black seed benefits in women? In one 8-week study, 90 women ages 25–50 with obesity were given a low calorie diet and either a placebo or 1 gram of black seed oil per meal for a total of 3 grams per day (Source).

At the end of the study, those taking the black seed oil had lost significantly more weight and waist circumference than the placebo group. The oil group also experienced significant improvements in triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels (Source).

Despite these promising results, more research is needed on the long-term safety and efficacy of taking black seed oil for weight loss.

7. May Lower Blood Sugar Levels

For individuals with diabetes, consistently high blood sugar levels have been shown to increase the risk of future complications, including kidney disease, eye disease, and stroke (Source).

Several studies in individuals with type 2 diabetes indicate that a dose of 2 grams per day of crushed whole black seeds may significantly reduce fasting blood sugar levels and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, a measure of average blood sugar levels over 2–3 months (SourceSourceSource).

While most studies use black seed powder in capsules, black seed oil has also been shown to help lower blood sugar levels (Source).

One study in 99 adults with type 2 diabetes found that both 1/3 teaspoon (1.5 mL) and 3/5 teaspoon (3 mL) per day of black seed oil for 20 days significantly reduced HbA1c levels, compared with a placebo (Source).

8. May Help Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels

High blood pressure and high total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels are important risk factors for heart disease (Source).

Here are some studies regarding the effectiveness of black seed oil in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

- Two studies, one in 90 women with obesity and the other in 72 adults with type 2 diabetes, found that taking 2–3 grams of black seed oil capsules per day for 8–12 weeks significantly reduced LDL (bad) and total cholesterol levels (Source).

- A study in 90 people with high cholesterol levels observed that consuming 2 teaspoons (10 grams) of black seed oil after eating breakfast for 6 weeks significantly reduced LDL (bad) cholesterol levels (Source).

- A study in 70 healthy adults noted that 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) of black seed oil twice a day for 8 weeks significantly reduced blood pressure levels, compared with a placebo (Source).

While promising, the overall research on black seed oil in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels is limited. More research is needed to confirm the optimal dose.

9. May Protect Brain Health

Neuroinflammation is inflammation of brain tissue. It’s thought to play an important role in the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s (SourceSource).

Early test-tube and animal research suggests that thymoquinone in black seed oil may reduce neuroinflammation. Therefore, it may help protect against brain disorders like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease (SourceSourceSourceSource).

However, there’s currently very little research on the effectiveness of black seed oil in humans specifically regarding the brain.

One study in 40 healthy older adults found significant improvements in measures of memory, attention, and cognition after taking 500 mg of N. sativa capsules twice a day for 9 weeks (Source).

Still, more research is needed to confirm black seed oil’s protective effects for brain health.

10. Black Seed Oil for COVID-19

Summary results of the 3 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) of Nigella Sativa (n=915) are available on this dedicated webpage: The 3 RCTs provide evidence that Nigella Sativa was associated with an average improvement of 84% in decreasing the likelihood of death and hospitalization.

A review of the action of Thymoquinone, the likely active ingredient in nigella sativa (black seed/black cumin), in the lung was published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine (July 2021).

Other potential benefits

Black seed oil may have other benefits for health, including:

- Anticancer effects. Test-tube studies have shown thymoquinone in black seed oil to help control the growth and spread of several types of cancer cells (SourceSource).

- Reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, limited research suggests that black seed oil may help reduce joint inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis (SourceSourceSource).

- Antifungal. Black seed oil has also been shown to have antifungal activities. In particular, it may protect against Candida albicans, which is a yeast that can lead to candidiasis ( SourceSource).

While early research shows promise in the applications of black seed oil, more studies in humans are needed to confirm these effects and the optimal dosage.

Oil - 2.5 to 5 ml two times daily.
Pills / Capsules - About 1 g per day. Up to 2.6 g/day is considered safe.

My husband I began taking black seed oil two weeks ago. His hands were both drawn up and he could not straighten his fingers out. After two weeks of taking two teaspoons a day - one in the morning and one in the evening - he can now straighten his left hand completely out flat without pain. His right hand is also beginning to straighten without pain. I have lost the pain I was having in my hips and lower back. We both feel better and have more energy after taking this oil and will continue to take it. I believe in its benefits so much that I have been recommending to friends and family!

I feel much healthier over all when I take these as prescribed. I am a vitamin nut, so anything I think will give me more energy or benefit me in some other way, I will try. I typically give a new product at least a couple of months before I decide whether I'll use it in the long run, and I just ordered my second bottle of this black seed oil yesterday and am excited to get my refill of it. It gives me energy, boosts my mood a bit in the morning, and I don't have to worry about a funky taste since I take it in gel tabs. I actually plan on checking out other health products from Health Logics too based off how much I like their black seed oil.

9. Zinc and Black Seed Oil Combination Benefits

Oral supplementation of zinc alone is not sufficiently effective since zinc cannot move easily across the cell wall. It needs another compound to provide transportation. The second compound is called a zinc ionophore. The application of zinc with an ionophore has demonstrated improved outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID (Source).

Research has identified several zinc ionophores, including chloroquine (Source), hydroxychloroquine (Source), Quercetin and EGCG (Source). Scientists have suggested that several of the terpenes in black seed oil, such as nigellimine, are similar in structure to chloroquine. They hypothesize that this may mean they can function in a similar manner as a zinc ionophore (Source).

Thus, recent data have shown that the active ingredients found in black seed oil may have greater potential in the treatment of COVID-19 than antiviral drugs, may act as a zinc ionophore and may help block the ACE2 receptors the virus uses to infect cells.
