Every five years, the USDA revises its set of “Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” Often, these updates go largely unnoticed, barely receiving even the briefest mention in news outlets. But in the past few months, the release of the scientific report that will inform new guidelines for 2025-2030 attracted an unusual level of public attention thanks to one particular change from previous editions — namely, the addition of a recommendation to decrease consumption of animal-derived proteins (including meat, poultry, and eggs) in favor of plant-based protein sources like beans, peas, and lentils.
