Common disinfectant wipes expose people to dangerous chemicals, research reveals - The Guardian

Image
Researchers say wipes contain chemical group called ‘quats’, which are linked to serious health problems. Since the pandemic’s outset, the global use of disinfectants has gone through the roof. Clorox dramatically  boosted production  of its wipe packs to 1.5m a day by mid-2021, and an industry trade group  said  83% of consumers surveyed around the same time reported they had used a disinfectant wipe in the last week. But as schools reopened, a group of toxic chemical researchers grew concerned as they heard reports of kids regularly using disinfectant wipes on their classroom desks, or teachers running disinfectant foggers. The researchers knew the disinfectants did little to protect consumers from Covid, and were instead exposing kids at alarming levels to what they say are a dangerous chemical group – quaternary ammonium compounds, also known as QACs, or “quats”. Quats are common components in popular disinfectant wipes and sprays, especially those that claim to ...

Disinfectant Wipes Are Linked to Health Problems - Dr Mercola

Quaternary ammonium compounds are also called “QACs” or “quats.” They are a broad class of several hundred chemicals and are commonly used in wood preservatives, mouthwash, detergents, shampoos, fabric softeners, eye drops and herbicides. QACs are largely used in the U.S. While the European Union has not banned QACs, 1  the regulating agency has set a very low maximum residue level (MRL) of 0.01 mg per kilogram (mg/kg) for pesticides used on food or animal feed. Applications in the U.S. range from industrial, clinical, domestic and agricultural. They can be measured in food production, households, facilities and medical settings. According to data from the University of Massachusetts, 2  some ready-to-use products, like disinfectant hand wipes, can contain up to 20% active QAC ingredients and industrial concentrations may contain up to 80% of the active ingredients.  Chemical Industry Claims Safety Testing Is Rigorous In the University of Massachusetts’ review 3  the...

Top 8 Nontoxic Cleaners You Can Use at Home 2023

With household cleaner use being as dangerous for your lung health as long-term smoking, clearing out your cleaning cabinet could be a really simple way of safeguarding your family's health. It's true, research 1   from the University of Bergen in Norway has demonstrated that once-weekly use of cleaning products for 20 years may be equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 10 to 20 years. The authors postulate the damage could be attributed to the irritation most chemicals cause on the mucous membranes lining your lungs. Over time, this can result in persistent changes and airway remodeling. As noted by senior author Cecilie Svanes, Ph.D., professor at the University of Bergen Center for International Health: 2 "[W]hen you think of inhaling small particles from cleaning agents that are meant for cleaning the floor and not your lungs, maybe it is not so surprising … The take-home message of this study is that in the long run clean...
